What Is Our Identity?

We're going to get a little heavy for a second, but this is incredibly important to understand.

We all have a mental model of ourself.. 
Its likely vague or not defined to used consciously..
But subconsciously, we all have a complete model of ourself, down to every last detail. 
Its our own conception of "the sort of person I am"
Our identity is made up, of a complex collection of subconscious beliefs about ourself. 
Its basically "the kind of person" we believe ourself to be. 

Our Beliefs Control us

Imagine this scenario..
Theres a red button in front of you. 
You push it..
And you experience the most excruciating pain you have ever experienced in your life.. 
Then I walk into the room.. And I say "hey push that button"..
Are you going to push it? NO!
Because you now have a belief, that if you push the button you experience pain.. 
This new belief about the button.. Will fundamentally influence.. 
How you think about it, how you feel about it and how you act around it.. 
Thoughts: You might think.. "I don't like that button.." "I want to get away from it"
Emotions: You might feel scared or fearful when around the button..
Actions: You would probably try to avoid the button. You certainly wouldn't push it. 

The point is..
What you believe to be true, influences your thoughts, emotions and actions

Our identity is made up of beliefs about ourself..
Our beliefs about ourself influence & limit all of our thoughts, emotions and actions..
In any given situation..
We can ONLY think, feel and act like the kind of person we believe ourself to be.. 
Our identity is like our "inner blueprint" for how to think, feel and act in the real world. 

Our identity Is The Source Of Social Anxiety

When we try to act in such a way, that "goes against" our beliefs about ourself..
We experience anxiety..
This is the root cause of social anxiety.. 
If you don't believe you are "the type of person" to do something.. But you try to do it..
You will experience anxiety.. 

Your Identity Is Like A Mental Electric Fence

Think about it like this.. 
The beliefs that shape your identity are like a mental electric fence..
Your beliefs keep you confined within a certain limit of what you are capable of doing. 
So.. If you try to act or do something that goes beyond these limits.. 
You experience anxiety.. 
If you try to do a presentation in front of 50 people.. 
But you don't believe you are the type of person to do that..
Or you believe you can only talk in front of 1 person at a time..
Attempting to do the presentation, will cause a tremendous amount of anxiety.. 
The "farther" an action is beyond the limits of your belief, the MORE anxiety you feel.. 

The Solution To Social Anxiety

Is by strengthening or forming a new identity of yourself.. 
Eliminating negative beliefs about yourself.. 
And forming new positive beliefs about yourself..
So that you are capable of doing more things without anxiety holding you back..
But how do you form new beliefs about yourself?

Experience Forms Beliefs

Think back to the red button.. 
You took the action of pushing the button.. You experienced the result.. 
The experience of the result.. Formed a belief about the button.. 
So in short.. Experience forms your beliefs..
That is how you ended up with social anxiety in the first place..
Throughout your life.. You had some series of experiences..
That formed negative beliefs about yourself.. 
And eliminated any positive beliefs about yourself..
Causing you to feel anxiety in even the smallest social situations..  

This Is How Exposure Therapy Works

Exposure therapy is all about slowly exposing yourself to what you fear
In the case of social anxiety, its social situations and interactions..
But whats happening behind the certain.. 
Is you basically attempt to strategically use small experiences.. 
To form new beliefs about yourself.. To reshape your identity.. 
Theres only one problem with that..

Our Mind Doesn't Know The Difference

Our mind & body can't tell the difference between "real" experience & "mental" experience
What do I mean by this?
Well.. "real" experience would be anything you experience in "the real world"
Something you experience with your senses: sight, sound, smell, taste and touch..
But I discovered.. That our mind treats "mental" experience as if it were real. 
What do I mean by "mental" experience?
Well.. Any experience that "originates" from within your mind. 
Here is a few examples..

Thinking Thoughts:
When I say thinking thoughts..
I am referring to our "inner voice".. You can probably hear it right now as you read this..
You can hear it can't you? Yeah you can hear it! This is mental experience. 

"Replaying" Memories:
Or just "remembering"..
So anytime you remember and replay a past experience in your mind.. 
Thats also mental experience.. 

Imagined Futures:
So whenever you imagine what the future may hold..
You only ever experience the present moment..
So when you imagine an event or situation in the future.. Thats mental experience.. 

Mental Experience Is The Key

I basically figured out.. 
That I could use mental experience in particular ways.. 
To form new beliefs about myself.. 
Reshape my identity or "the type of person" I believed I was..
And completely eliminate my social anxiety..
Which enabled me to achieve what I wanted in life..
